The DfE have reinforced the need to create a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British Values of
democracy,
the rule of law,
individual liberty,
mutual respect,
tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
The Government set out its definition of British Values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy.
Pupils have many opportunities for their voices to be heard. We have an active school council who meet regularly and have opportunities to feedback to the Leadership Team.
We help our pupils develop a sense of responsibility, respect for the legal systems and an understanding of how laws contribute to a safe and fair society.
We actively encourage our pupils to make choices, voice opinions, discuss ideas and express themselves within a safe and respectful environment.
We have a culture build upon mutual respect, which encourages students to value each other’s differences and promotes positive interactions. Staff model respectful behaviour by treating all pupils fairly and equally. Respect is woven into the curriculum through activities that teach empathy, cooperation and emotional intelligence.
We emphasise the importance of understanding and respecting a wide range of religious beliefs, enabling pupils to appreciate the value of diversity. Themed days are planned throughout the year, to make sure that students are able to understand what life is like in different cultures.
We are committed to a policy of treating each person equally and we have carefully considered and analysed the impact of our policies on equality and the possible implications for individuals with protected characteristics, recognising the need to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations.
The 9 protected characteristics are:
AGE
SEX
DISABILITY
ETHNICITY
GENDER REASSIGNMENT
RELIGION / BELIEF
SEXUAL ORIENTATION
MARRIAGE / CIVIL PARTNER
PREGNANCY / MATERNITY
